In 2021, the Landlord and Tenant Board was the first tribunal in Ontario to implement a new online portal system that allows applications to be filed and processed online. For many tenants on a low income with little or no access to the internet or a legal representative, the online portal has not made things easier. Major delays, poor access to hearings and an inability to file important evidence and documents are commonly reported by users. Many tenants are relying on community workers to help file their applications and respond to landlords through the online portal.
