Do you work with clients who have or are experiencing trauma?

Are you interested in building your knowledge and developing your skills to understand and respond effectively to the impact of trauma?

Learn how trauma can impact a person’s ability to address legal issues and how legal issues can cause or trigger trauma.

Our speakers will discuss how to:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma;
  • Integrate knowledge about trauma in your day to day work through a principled framework;
  • Avoid unknowingly re-traumatizing clients you are supporting;
  • Explore key barriers for trauma survivors within the Canadian justice system and strategies to overcome them;
  • Learn about the intersection of trauma and mental health disability through a human rights framework.

Speakers:

Dr. Melis Alkin, Psy.D., ABPP, FT is a board-certified clinical psychologist licensed in California and New York. She specializes in trauma, death, dying and bereavement from a trauma informed integrative and humanistic perspective.

Amy Slotek is a Staff Lawyer with Legal Aid Ontario. Since 2016, she has coordinated a Legal Aid Ontario Program focused on meeting the interconnected legal needs of homeless accused who manage complex mental health disabilities in Toronto.
